Mulcahy: Taoiseach ‘Mistake’ In Not Taking Part In Seanad Debate

A Clare Fine Gael Senator says the Taoiseach made a mistake in not participating in a public debate on the Seanad’s future, before the referendum on the abolition of the Upper House.

The comments from Shannon representative Tony Mulcahy come after the rejection of government plans to abolish the Seanad, a result he has welcomed after he openly opposed the government’s position.

While a number of Fine Gael figures have defended Enda Kenny’s decision not to take part in a televised debate on the matter, Senator Mulcahy thinks this was a mistake.

However, he says he’s not sure if this was the deciding factor in the poll, despite the tight margin of victory for the No side.
