Mulcahy Backs New Domestic Violence Laws

It's hoped that a new Domestic Violence Bill will address major cracks in the legal system.

The Bill, which has been launched by government, would make it easier to obtain emergency barring orders and also prevent a domestic violence offender from communicating electronically with their victim.

It's due before the Oireachtas in September, when the Dáil resumes, and should be passed before the next election.

Shannon Fine Gael Senator Tony Mulcahy, who spoke at an Oireachtas hearing of how his own father was a "thug" and a "bully", says there will now be greater accountability for those who are violent in the home.
