Motorway Service Station On Outskirts Of Ennis Hits Stumbling Block

Pat McDonagh is looking to replicate the success of his Barack Obama Plaza in Moneygall by opening up a similar facility at Kilbreckan, Doora near Junction 12 of the M18.

He says this will deliver up to 100 jobs, as well as more during construction.

Permission was granted by Clare County Council last month, and it had been hoped that construction would begin in April.

Now though, An Bord Pleanala has received appeals from local landowner Shane Brigdale, as well as others on behalf of the Applegreen chain and the Claureen Service Station in Ennis.

Agents for the Claureen Service station claim that the project contravenes the Ennis and Environs Development Plan.

While, Applegreen is appealing on a number of grounds including that it would negatively impact the retail function of Ennis and Clarecastle.

The Council is currently considering an application by Applegreen for its own service station near Junction 11 of the motorway at Dromoland.
