The prospest of a major jobs boost for the MidWest has moved a step closer.

Marks and Spencers says a new flagship store is at proposal stages for Limerick – if the project gets the go ahead it could create up to 250 jobs and will open in 2016.

The announcements come as part of a review of its stores in Ireland which will see four stores closing in Dublin, Kildare and Westmeath with the loss of 180 jobs.

Meanwhile, 102 jobs are to go at Superquinn as owners Musgraves rebrand the high-end retailer as Supervalu.

The jobs will go from Superquinn’s support office in Lucan but Musgrave says the 2500 store staff are unaffected.

From February next year the brand name Superquinn will be no more.
