On Saturday, residents in parts of the city had to be evacuated from their homes by boat after the river Shannon burst its banks and several feet of water swamped homes.

John Gilligan is the Mayor of Limerick city – his house was among those hit at the weekend.

He says Irish people have a proud tradition of donating money to those hit by natural disasters around the world – and millions of euro will be needed to repair the damage done in the city
