A major clean-up operation has taken place at the West Clare resort, after vandals entered the site on Wednesday and dug holes on the golf course.

Gardaí believe protestors carried out a number of acts of criminal damage on the golf course at Doonbeg on Wednesday between 5pm and midnight, during which time Taoiseach Micheál Martin was being hosted in the White House by the property’s owner, US President Donald Trump.

It’s understood several holes were dug on two greens and a number of Palestinian flags were mounted.

Investigations are said to be ongoing and Gardaí are appealing to any witnesses, including anyone who may have video footage, to come forward.

Speaking to Clare FM’s Morning Focus, General Manager of Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Doonbeg, Joe Russell says the damage was “minimal” and has been attended to.

It’s not the first time Trump’s detractors in Clare have made their feelings known.

In 2019, multiple demonstrations were held across the county on the occasion of the then 45th President’s visit.

Doonbeg Fianna Fáil Councillor Rita McInerney believes when it comes to business and politics, it’s a case of “never the twain shall meet”.
