Locals in Miltown Malbay are raising concern over a lack of infrastructure in the town, ahead of the arrival of up to 42 International Protection Applicants to a local hotel in the coming days.
The Central Hotel previously hosted Asylum seekers in 2020, when thirteen residents wrote to the Department of Justice seeking transfer, citing concerns over the living conditions.
The Department of Integration’s briefing document states that under the conditions of the contract, works including repairing roof leaks, repainting, upgrading window blinds, relaying floors and installing new fire doors have all been carried out by the new owners since the property was acquired earlier this year.
But locals in Miltown say they fear the facility won’t be able to handle a significantly larger population and that the town itself lacks vital amenities and infrastructure.
