MidWest Rape Crisis Centre Fear Legislation On Sex-For-Rent Arrangements Won’t Result In Prosecutions

The MidWest Rape Crisis Centre fears the introduction of legislation on sex-for-rent arrangements won’t address the core issue of the power imbalance created by the housing crisis.

It comes as the Oireachtas Justice Committee has recommended against the Ban on Sex for Rent Bill 2022 proceeding through the Dáil, due to legal concerns.

The bill proposed a jail term of seven years and a fine of up to €50,000, but the committee has flagged difficulties in prosecuting such charges in the courts.
