The MidWest Hospital Campaign claims people in Clare, Limerick and North Tipperary have been made “second-class citizens” by the standard of healthcare available in the region.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation yesterday recorded the highest level of overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick on record for the month of August with 110 people on trolleys during morning rounds and 49 of those in the Emergency Department.
In addition, the number of patients waiting for a bed at the facility exceeded that of the entire Eastern region for five days straight during the week of the 24th of July for the first time on record.
The UL Hospitals Group has issued a statement saying an average of 220 people attended the ED at UHL every day during July which far exceeds the 195 daily attendances of 2019, which was the last full year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Marie McMahon, who is member of the Midwest Hospital Campaign and who’s husband passed away at UHL in 2018, says the area the hospital serves it too large for it to be able to provide adequate care to all.
