Families across the Midwest are said to be reaping the benefits of a new technology based approach to patient care at the region’s main hospital.
Since July last year, 325 patients have received care at the virtual ward, linked to University Hospital Limerick to monitor patients in their own homes up to three times daily.
In the process, 2,053 inpatient beds have been freed up in UHL enabling the treatment of more acutely ill inpatients.
Nurse and Midwifery Informatics Officer, Patricia O’Gorman who led the ward’s implementation, says the new approach is giving families greater peace of mind and reduces the risk of hospital acquired infections.
