The number of children in the Midwest living in homelessness has risen by more than 30% in the last year.
The Department of Housing’s latest monthly report has found that there were almost 60 additional children in emergency accommodation across the region in August compared to the same month in 2024.
A record 16,353 people nationwide were residing in emergency accommodation in the week of the 25th to the 31st of August.
A total of 11,208 of these were adults while 5,145 were children.
In the Midwest, 601 adults were homeless in the week in question which was up 16% on the figure for the same time last year.
Clare accounted for 72 of these which was broadly in line with its month-to-month figures.
The data also reveals that 250 child dependents were living in emergency accommodation at the end of August, indicating a 31% increase in a year.
