Men Accounted For 18 Of Clare’s 19 Suicides Last Year

Only three counties recorded more male suicides than Clare last year.

New data published by the Central Statistics Office shows that of the 19 people who died by suicide here in 2024, just one was female.

According to the CSO, 927 deaths took place in Clare last year which is 7% below the figure for 2023.

The most common cause of death here was malignant neoplasms which accounted for 273 deaths.

This was followed by diseases of the circulatory system which resulted in 253 deaths, with diseases of the respiratory system accounting for 118 and external causes of injury and poisoning leading to 62.

For 221 deaths meanwhile, another cause of death was listed.

A total of 19 suicides were recorded in Clare in 2024 which was the fifth-highest number nationwide after Cork County, Dublin City, Wexford and South Dublin.

Of these, 18 were male, giving Clare the fourth-highest rate of male suicide in the country after Wexford, Cork County and Dublin City.

Turning to births, 1,232 babies were born in this county in 2024, meaning the county had a natural increase of 305.

For the second year in a row, the average age of a mother here was 33.7 which is the joint-sixth-highest nationwide.

728, or 59% of births, took place within marriage while the remaining 504, or 41%, were outside of marriage.
