McSharry refuses request to withdraw Shannon Airport complaint

The Sligo Senator who has called on the European Commission to investigate the deal which established Shannon Airport on a debt-free, independent footing has rebuffed a call to withdraw this complaint.

Fianna Fáil’s Marc MacSharry claims the move will adversely impact Knock Airport, and has asked the EC to investigate what he alleges to be a breach of laws regarding state aid.

Clare County Councillors had called on the Senator to withdraw his complaint, but in a letter to local representatives, seen by Clare FM, the Senator says he ‘declines’ to do so.  He insists he supports moves to stimulate passenger growth at Shannon, provided such opportunities are also extended to knock.

The government has insisted the deal is legal, but Shannon Fine Gael Councillor Sean McLoughlin fears this complaint could hamper developments at Clare’s international airport.
