Clare’s Independent TD says he wants to be the next Ceann Comhaire of the Dáil, because he wants to lead its reform.
Michael McNamara has emailed his fellow TDs, expressing an interest in standing for the role which will be filled when the Dáil holds its first post-election gathering this Thursday.
In his email, the Scarriff man outlines how he wants to reform the system of paliamentary questions, to facilitate debate in the Dail Chamber, and to curtail the use of the ‘money message’ that has been used by government to block legislation when there is a cost to the exchequer.
In his email, Deputy McNamara says he’d like to become Ceann Comhairle for a limited period of six months to implement these reforms, and that he wouldn’t look to stay in the role beyond then.
He also says he’d support other candidates who would agree to carry out this reform agenda.
