McNamara Criticises Lough Derg Water Plans In Dail

The government has been told that people in the Mid-West will fight to protect the waters of Lough Derg in the row over proposals to divert water from the River Shannon to supply Dublin. In a heated debate on the issue.

Clare Labour TD Michael McNamara hit out at the Minister for Natural Resources demanding maintenance of water levels in Lough Derg and a correction of water wastage in Dublin before any scheme to take water from the Mid-West is allowed.

Minister Fergus O’Dowd told the Scarriff TD that moving the water supply will provide water for new jobs in and around Dublin, but Deputy McNamara demanded to know why water dependent industries can’t move to the Mid-West instead.
