The Mayor of Clare says the county needs to grab the opportunity of the Irish Open with both hands when it makes landfall next year.
With news breaking yesterday, that Trump Doonbeg will host the domestic leg of the 2026 DP World Tour, it’s hoped locally that the West Clare peninsula can harness the benefits for generations to come.
The 2026 Amgen Irish Open will take place at Trump International Golf Links, Doonbeg from September 10th to 13th next year.
2019 was the last time the event came to Clare and when hosted in Lahinch, the local economy is estimated to have generated over €10m in a single week.
There’s also been contrasting speculation over whether President Trump would attend, given the significant security risks.
Doonbeg Community Activist Tommy Comerford who was a driving force in the creation of the Golf Course in the early 1990s believes Trump would deserve a warm welcome for his investment in the area.
The event will be broadcast live to over 300 million people around the globe, while tens of thousands are expected to make their way West for a taste of the excitement.
Mayor Of Clare Paul Murphy is hopeful there will be long lasting industrial and tourism benefits harnessed from the open and that particularly the hidden gem of the Loop Head Peninsula will be opened to the world.
