Manufacturing biggest Clare employer

Manufacturing industries remain the biggest employer in County Clare, according to the latest breakdown of the census figures.

The population survey carried out by the Central Statistics office in April 2011, has also revealed an unemployment rate of 18.8% in Clare with over 10,500 people declaring they were out of work.

"At  Work  – Employment, occupations and industry  in Ireland", is the third profile report examining census results in more detail.

The report reveals 14.2% of Clare workers  – that’s 6,473 people – are employed in manufacturing, while the wholesale and retail trade accounted for 12.3% or 5,621 jobs.

9.8% are employed in the health and social work sector, and 8.4% of Clare residents are working in Agriculture, Forestry or Fishing – that’s well above the national average of 5.2% for this sector.

Of the 10, 542 people in Clare who were unemployed when the Census was conducted, 737 people were first time job seekers 18.3% of the unemployed in Clare were non Irish nationals, compared with a 19.5% national average.
