The 40-year-old man, believed to be a non-Irish national living in Clare, was reported to have fallen into the sea off rocks at around 11.30am.
The Kilkee unit of the Irish Coast Guard and an ambulance were sent to the scene after members of the public raised the alarm.
One passerby waded out into the waves with a lifebuoy and threw it to the man. The casualty was safely brought ashore where he was met by Irish Coast Guard first responders.
He was left shaken but otherwise uninjured and didn’t require hospitalisation.
