A jury has dismissed a Limerick man’s claim he was acting in self-defence when he shot a member of a rival motorbike club two years ago.

Alan McNamara from Mountfune in Murroe, Co. Limerick urged the jurors to consider a verdict of manslaughter, but was convicted of murder this afternoon.

Alan McNamara gave very little away when the jury’s verdict was announced just before lunchtime. His wife, who gave evidence of him being assaulted by members of the Road Tramps MC the day before the shooting, burst into tears.

Just hours after that assault, during which his Caballeros biker jacket was forcibly removed from him, he claimed three members from the rival club pulled up outside his house with a gun and threatened him and his family.

The next morning, on July 20th 2015, he said he could hear Harleys gathering at their clubhouse and he thought they were planning something, so he went up there with a shotgun and shot Andrew O’Donoghue in the head.

He admitted doing it but claimed he was acting in self-defence. The jury disagreed and convicted him of murder.

He’ll be handed the mandatory life sentence in October.
