A ‘major internal incident’ that was declared at the region’s main hospital earlier this month has been stood down today.

Significant reductions in scheduled care remain across the UL Hospitals Group this week.

It comes as Oireachtas members from this region are meeting with the Taoiseach, the Health Minister and senior hospital management on the matter today.

The UL Hospitals Group says ‘extraordinary measures’ taken, including the declaring of the incident on January 2nd, have helped to reduce the ‘extreme levels’ of overcrowding seen early last week at the Emergency Department at University Hospital Limerick.

All hospitals within the group are still operating ‘above capacity’ and the Group believes a surge in respiratory infections in the region hasn’t yet reached its peak.

The Hospital Crisis Management Team continues to meet twice daily seven days a week.

Day surgeries at Ennis, Nenagh and St John’s hospitals remains cancelled until the end of this week as day wards have been designated as surge capacity.

Outpatient appointments are going ahead as scheduled on all sites this week and patients are advised to attend.

Visiting restrictions remain in place at UHL, with the only exceptions to the ban being parents visiting children, people assisting confused patients and visits to critically unwell patients on a case-by-case basis.
