Loop Head Shark Gathering Could Be Globally Important

It’s believed the Clare coast could now be a globally important breeding area for basking sharks in the entire North Atlantic.

Hundreds of basking sharks have been engaging in “courtship behaviour” in waters off Loop Head in recent days.

They’re the world’s second largest fish, reaching up to 12 metres in length, but are harmless to humans, as they feed on plankton and some of the ocean’s smallest organisms.

Dr Simon Berrow from the Irish Basking Shark Group, which has been filming the endangered species near Loop Head says it’s truely “unbelievable”.
