Locals Say “Further Fatalities A Certainty” If Kilrush Road Safety Issues Not Addressed

It comes as a community group has launched a petition calling for a speed limit reduction near Lissycasey.

The straw that broke the camel’s back for residents of Darragh, near Lissycasey, came on Friday last, when a two-vehicle collision outside McNamee’s Londis on the N68 left one person hospitalised.

On this particular 2km stretch from Bansha Cross to Darragh North Cross, the speed limit is 100km per hour and it incorporates a number of residential and commercial entrances.

Since 2007, there have four fatalities along this section, while eleven have been hospitalised in various incidents.

Local Resident Kieran Collins says speed is the glaring issue.

Manager at McNamee’s Londis, Jaiden Gadd says he witnesses multiple near misses on a daily basis.

The community group is calling for a number of actions to be taken including reducing the 100km speed limit, the installation of rumble strips, enhanced lighting, road markings, hazard warnings and speed activated signage.

Owner of Darragh Based Custy Construction LTD, Dermot Custy says it’s urgently needed.

Local resident Orla Sheedy meanwhile says the safety measures are far overdue given the growing number of tourists, commuters and school children on the route.
