Lobby Group To Lodge Objection To Trump Wall

An environmental lobby group has called plans by Donald Trump's Doonbeg Golf Resort to construct a 200,000 tonne wall there as a "monstrous proposal."

Friends fo the Irish Environment say they'll lodge a formal objection to the plan which has been submitted to Clare County Council.

However, a number of people in the area are unhappy.

Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Ireland wants to build the 2.8km wall in a bid to prevent erosion at the golf course there.

Consultants acting for Mr. Trump have lodged an application with Clare County Council, claiming the wall is needed to ensure the long-term viability of the business.

230 people are directly employed there at peak season, which attracts over 50,000 visitors a year, and earlier this week General Manager Joe Russell outlined the need for this plan.

However, the Friends of the Irish Environment group says dunes at the edge of the coast won't be protected by the proposed wall.

Director Tony Lowes says the long-term impact of the project needs to be borne in mind.

An interview with Mr Lowes on Clare FM's Morning Focus today sparked a large number of comments from listeners, the majority of whom favoured building the wall and protecting the business which is a major employer in the area.

Local resident John Flanagan says Doonbeg needs flood defences such as this.
