Further update issued as Clare is included in an orange warning

Friday 2:40

And there’s plenty of craic being had throughout the county.  Clare loves it’s snow, and it loves it’s traditional music too!

This was Sixmilebridge this lunchtime.

Friday 2.35

And after we praised our emergency services in Clare, it’s good to see that’s happening throughout the country as well.  Ciaran hails from Ennis, and plays football for Éire Óg and Clare.

Friday 1:40

So, how much snow did fall?  The Council estimates that up to 8 inches fell in some areas, and snow drifts are even higher.  Paul in Kilmaley reported one there that was 3 feet high.

Kaitriona in Killaloe, meanwhile, has taken out the measuring tape and tells us there’s currently 55cm of snow

55 cm (nearly 2 foot!) of snow on Kaitriona's roof in Killaloe

Friday 1:30

Emergency services personnel throughout Clare have been working long and hard over the past few days.  Today we have heard of stories of Gardaí working double-shifts to cover for colleagues who couldn’t come in, as well as one Garda in Ennistymon who delivered a hot meal to a person in need.

Clare Civil Defence volunteers have been on standby since last night, and the retained firefighters in many parts spent last night in their stations in case of an emergency.  Thankfully, only one chimney fire was reported.  Ambulance personnel, Coast Guard crews and others have also been working, and we say a big well done to them all.

We also admire the snowman-making efforts of some fire crews in Clare!

Friday 12:00

Clare County Council says up to eight inches of snow have fallen in Clare following persistent snowfall overnight and this morning.

The county’s five snow ploughs, and gritting fleet have been out in an effort to clear roads but roads remain impassible in many areas.

The local authority together with Gardaí and Transport Infrastructure Ireland are urging people not to take to the roads today and that issues may persist into tomorrow and the coming days.

Thursday 7.00

In Ennis this evening it is literally a case of the calm before the storm.  It is bitterly cold, but there has been no significant snowfall in the last while.  There are some sporadic showers, however, and Storm Emma is still on track to bring significant snow to the county in the hours ahead.

Met Eireann’s latest weather forecast predicts “Blizzard conditions tonight and during Friday in Leinster and Munster. Southern and eastern coastal counties expected to receive exceptionally high accumulations.”

Their alert also extends the Status Red alert until 6 p.m. tomorrow in Leinster and Munster, indicating that the snow event could last longer than had been anticipated.

Thursday 4.54

Snow is beginning to build in many areas around the county now with some western coastal towns reporting quite a bit lying on the ground.

In Killaloe, Main Street in the town is still closed and all roads around Killaloe-Ballina are treacherous so anyone still out driving needs to be extra careful.

And it’s being felt on roads too

Thursday 3.35

Thursday 3.15

Earlier, a listener was asking for advice for farmers.  This has been issued this afternoon by the Department of Agriculture.

Farm Safety

Farm Safety is paramount during bad weather- Whilst the more significant concerns on farm relate to the provision of water, shelter and feed to livestock, whether housed or being outwintered. It is essential that farm safety is prioritised above all else. In the case of sheep flocks it is essential that they are brought to a sheltered area in advance of the worst of this event. Where farmers are tending animals, they should ensure they carry a fully charged mobile phone and let people know where they are- checking in regularly. If tending animals in remote locations, a second person should accompany them. Take care around the farmyard ensuring concrete areas are gritted or salted. Falls are the biggest threat and take care to avoid. Do not attempt to remove snow from roofs of farm buildings. To avoid damage to pumps, milking equipment etc, drain thoroughly. Water for livestock remains a significant problem on farms with pipes and ball-cocks for supply freezing, but continued access to water is important at this time when cows are calving and sheep lambing.

Animal Welfare

The Department’s 24 hour animal welfare helpline will continue to be monitored over the coming days. Members of the public with any concerns can contact the Department’s helpline on  Call Save 0761 064408 or 01 6072379

The Department has been in constant contact with industry facilitating orderly operation and wind-down of processing operations. It is important to recognise that a temporary reduction in such processing will not impact on retail supplies. Fishing vessels in areas most impacted have generally also returned to port at this time.

The Department wishes to emphasise that as farmers deal with the difficulty conditions on farms at present that there is a need for safety first at all times in the period ahead.

Thursday 3.10

There have only been wisps of snow in Ennis this afternoon, though naturally much more is expected later.

Clearly, however, there has been much more snow in other areas.

Message From HSE MidWest Crisis Management Team

HSE Mid West wishes to advise that all routine Community Healthcare services across Clare Limerick & North Tipperary are deferred for Thursday and Friday. Only the most essential homecare and community nursing services are being prioritised for delivery to older people and people with disabilities. Every effort is being made to maintain critical services in the home to complex paediatric cases and adults with high dependency. All public residential hospitals and units for the elderly, disabled and those with a mental health condition remain open however staffing these services is challenging in such conditions.

Our colleagues at UL Hospitals have also restricted services to essential and emergency for the period and are making contact with people for whom special arrangements and continuity of service needs to be maintained. Anyone who has an appointment scheduled at a UL Hospital site and is in doubt can contact the relevant hospital.

Detailed information is available across all media platforms including Twitter @CommHealthMW @ULHospitals

The HSE Mid West Crisis Management Team is in full operational mode and will convene again later this morning Thursday. The HSE is participating in co-ordination centres in Tipperary Limerick and Clare where we are working with Local Authorities and Garda Divisions as the other two Principal Response Agencies (PRA s) and supported by the Defence Forces and other service providers. More information on local media and Twitter feeds @LimerickCouncil @HSELive @CommHealthMW @ULHospitals @ClareCoCo @TipperaryCoCo @GardaTraffic @gardainfo

Our clear message is Stay In, Stay Safe and make any essential arrangements you need this morning including checking on vulnerable family or neighbours. Do not travel out of shelter from Mid Afternoon today. The situation is highly dangerous.

Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport remains fully operational this morning with airport staff working through last night in challenging conditions to keep the runway operational.

Services are operating normally, with the airport’s first flights to Stansted and Heathrow departing on time. The inbound Aer Lingus Boston flight landed on time, while the Norwegian, Newburgh flight is expected to arrive at 10.20am.
