Ennis has fallen out of the top 10 rankings of the country’s cleanest towns and villages, in the latest anti litter league survey

The latest report from Irish Businesses Against Litter reveals the county town, which held the top spot in the country 6 years ago, has dropped seven places in the past 12 months.

Founded in 1996, Irish Businesses Against Litter monitors towns nationwide independently and in accordance with international grading standards.

While Ennis has held the fifth spot in the table for the last two surveys, the IBAL rankings for 2023 have put the county town all the way down to 12th place.

The An Taisce report describes Ennis’s result as “strong” and notes that seven out of the 10 sites inspected received the top litter grade, including O’Connell Street, Abbey Street, Ennis Court House and Roslevan Shopping Centre.

Commenting on these sites, the report states that not only were they “very good with regard to litter” but were also “very well-presented and maintained”.

The inspectors note that Ennis was let down by the “heavily-littered” Ennis Bus and Train Station which had a corner area where bags of rubbish had been dumped.

The result puts the county town in the category of ‘clean to European norms’.

Nationally, the 2023 Anti-Litter League report marks the first time that none of the 40 towns assessed were deemed “seriously littered”.

Looking at the league leaders, Maynooth in Kildare edged out all other competition to take the top spot followed by Mallow, County Cork and Sligo Town.
