Clare County Council says lifeguard cover is being extended at four beaches in the county, in reponse to concern over high volumes attending coastal areas over the weekend.
50 lifeguards will be taking up their posts from next Saturday, to coincide with the beginning of the official bathing season.
They were due to cover weekends only for the month of June, but after people took to the coast in their droves in recent fine weather, full-time cover will be provided on weekdays from next weekend.
The focus will be on the four busiest beaches; Fanore, Lahinch, Spanish Point and Kilkee, with lifeguards posted at other beaches on weekdays, subject to availability.
There were a number of reports of incidents in the water at Lahinch beach over the weekend and Clare County Council’s Director of Physical Development, Carmel Kirby says that was a concern.
