Bayley, who had pleaded guilty, was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Victorian Supreme Court this morning.

At a pre-sentence hearing earlier this month, it was revealed he had previous convictions for more than 20 rape offences and was on parole when he  murdered Jill.

This morning Justice Geoffrey Nettle described Bayley as a "recidivist, violent sex offender who intended to kill".  However, he said that Bayley’s guilty plea had to be taken into consideration.

Jill’s family and her husband Tom were in court for the sentencing hearing this morning.

Speaking outside court Jill’s father George McKeown thanked the police and the legal team and said justice had been done.
