Clare’s Independent TD has described the level of redundancies at Moneypoint Power Station as shocking, ahead of a meeting with the ESB today.
ESB officials will meet with Dr Michael Harty and the county’s other Oireachtas members this morning to discuss the future of the plant, following the news on Monday in which employees were told 106 workers would be laid off by October.
The current coal-burning operations at the station, near Kilrush, will cease by 2025, which has led to widespread fear for the future of the economy of West Clare.
Dr Harty says he will be seeking clarity from the ESB on the job losses today.
Meanwhile, the Seanad has heard calls for the government to introduce a special task force, to deal with the potential job losses at Moneypoint.
The ESB is the second highest employer in West Clare and Senator Martin Conway believes the company needs to significantly engage with unions and workers to find a solution.
