Less than a third of regional roads in Clare received the top grade for surface condition last year.
The Pavement Surface Condition Index rates road conditions on a scale from 1 to 10 and is used to grade the level of maintenance needed by the local authority.
The latest information from the National Oversight and Audit Commission shows that 71% of regional roads in Clare received a PSCI rating in the two years to December 2021.
Of those rated, only 33% of the county’s total regional road kilometres scored between 9 and 10 on the scale – slightly higher than the national average of 30%.
41% of the overall kilometres measured between 7 and 8 in surface quality, while 3% scored the lowest grade of between 1 and 4.
The grading disimproved on local primary roads in the Banner, with less than a quarter of the total kilometres on these roads scoring the top mark.
Local Secondary roads in the county saw a further decrease, with just over 18% of the total kilometres in this category scoring either a 9 or 10.
Finally 14% of tertiary roads in Clare made the top grade, just below the national average of 15%.
Clare County Council spent over €15.5m on road strengthening and resealing in 2021.
