The HSE's nurse recruitment campaign has brought in less than 20 per cent of its target since last year.

The scheme aimed to attract 500 nurses to work here, and has only brought 88 so far.

When the HSE launched the scheme in July 2015 they aimed to attract 500 nurses.

After spending a quarter of a million euro since then, they've attracted just 88.

And the INMO says half of those have since left the country.

Part of that is down to competition from abroad.

INMO Deputy General Secretary Dave Hughes says there's also competition from private hospitals in Ireland.

The scheme to get them to stay is offering 1,500 euro a year – but many countries, and private hospitals, are offering much more.
