The Clare-based CEO of Women for Election believes we’re living with the legacy of “disappearing women into the home and out of public life” after achieving the free state.
The county’s female representation in the council has historically been very poor, with the 2019 local elections seeing a record five female councillors elected.
That number has since reduced to four, however, after Roisin Garvey was appointed a Senator and the subsequent resignaton of Susan Crawford, who was co-opted onto the council to replace her.
Ireland is sitting in the bottom four in Europe in terms of representation of women in local government and Catríona Gleeson from Killaloe says while the country has regressed in the last century, she’s hopeful the number of Clare women running for the local elections will double in 2024.
