Leaving Cert Result Delay “Reckless” Says Students Rep

The decision to release this year’s Leaving Cert results almost three weeks later has been described as “reckless” by a student representative.

The State Exams Commission confirmed the date yesterday, but concern has emerged that it’s too late for students and third level institutions.

This year’s Leaving Cert results will be released on Friday September 2nd, with CAO offers for third level places expected to begin the following week.

The results process has been delayed again this year by almost three weeks, due to the impact of the Covid pandemic.

The State Exams Commission says a shortage of examiners, deferred exams and ensuring grades aren’t lower than last year made providing a date challenging.

The Clare Regional Officer with the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union, Molly-Jane Sweeney says students are happy to have a date to look forward to, but they’ll be lobbying for the start date to be pushed back.

NUIG’s Student Union President has described the later date as reckless, saying students will have to scramble for accommodation.

Róisín Nic Lochlainn says current students are already having difficulty in securing somewhere to live and that September is too late for students to prepare for the new academic year.

TUS, which has a campus on Bindon Street in Ennis, has set up a student accommodation working group and are working to actively increase provision in September.

It’s President Áine Daly is encouraging students to reach out to support services if they have concerns.
