Large Iceberg Breaks Off Antarctic Ice Shelf

A massive iceberg more than one a half times larger than the size of Co. Clare has broken off the Antarctic ice shelf.

The giant block is estimated to cover an area of almost 6,000 sq kilometres.

Scientists were expecting it as they had been been monitoring a growing crack.

The release of the new iceberg – called calving – was detected by a satellite.
