The chapel and grounds of Ennis Cathedral have been filled well in advance of today’s one o’clock funeral mass, as mourners have come from near and far to bid a fond farewell to Bishop Willie Walsh.

Thousands also attended last night’s reposal at the venue, whilst today the Vatican has sent an official message of condolence on behalf of Pope Francis.

Bishop Walsh is often best known for his compassion towards victims of clerical abuse, the travelling community and for taking his own public stance on issues such as family life and marriage.

Diocesan Communications Officer Fr Brendan Quinlivan says he always had the best interests of others at heart.

Although a native of Roscrea, Bishop Walsh firmly put his stamp on Clare through his 66 years as a priest in Ennis, 16 years as the Bishop of Killaloe and 25 years as secondary teacher in St Flannans.

For his sporting contributions, he was also appointed President of Clare GAA in 2023.

Sixmilebridge Parish Priest Fr Harry Bohan says he was a courageous individual was never afraid to go against the popular opinion of the church and that he will be remembered as the heart and soul of the diocese.
