No meteorologist was required to explain the rainbow phenomenon in Ennis today as Clare’s LGBTQ+ community along with its many supporters took to the streets to celebrate the county’s first ever pride parade.

The event was organised by Quare Clare and saw over 250 people descend on the town, with the Ennis Brass Brand and the Clare Traveller Community Development Group among them.

According to the latest census results there are now 141 same sex couples living together in the county, representing a rise of 50% since the passing of the marriage equality referendum in 2016.

However despite the great strides made in recent years, event organiser Sarah Clancy says many people are still reluctant to come forward as their true selves and events like todays play a vital role.

Also in attendance at the Banner County’s inaugural march was the MidWest Gender, Orientation, Sexual Health and HIV service.

GOSHH member Cillian Flynn says although legislation in this country may have changed, attitudes can take a long time, however support will always be available for those who wish to come out.

The Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District also took to the streets of the county town for today’s celebrations.

Sinn Féín Councillor, Donna McGettigan says her own sons journey opened her eyes to the difficulties and suffering’s faced by the LGBTQ+ community on a daily basis.
