He was born in Lahinch in 1959, while his family later moved to Limerick.

He later worked part-time with the Bunratty Castle entertainers and has most recently worked as Parish Prist in Rathkeale, Co. Limerick.

The soon-to-be Bishop Cullinan replaces the retiring Bishop Wililam Lee and will lead a Diocese which contains parts of Cork and Tipperary as well as Waterford, and has a Roman Catholic population of 152,000.
