Kilrush Town Divided Over Social Housing

A Kilrush Councillor has played down suggestions that residents of one housing estate in the town have been protesting against moves which could see the Council buy homes there for social housing.

A number of signs, which simply read 'House For Sale' and have not been erected by auctioneers, have been put in place outside some homes in Beal na Inbhir on the Shanakyle Road.

Clare County Council says it is exploring the purchase of vacant homes in Kilrush, as part of a gradual wider process, and the local authority insists it is engaging with residents groups.

Clare FM has been in contact with residents in Beal na Inbhir, who have declined to comment, but Kilrush Councillor Ian Lynch insists that residents there are in favour of moves which could see more families move in.

However, Kilrush woman Joanne Carrig, one of the 3,000 people on the local housing waiting list in Clare, isn't convinced.
