Clare County Council and Kilrush Town Council have entered a detailed bid to host the event, which was first held in 2009 and will be staged in Munster next year.

The West Clare Town was one of the worst affected during the famine, and the bid has received the support of a number of groups locally.

Mayor of Kilrush Councillor Mairead O’Brien says people in the town would warmly welcome the opportunity to commemorate the famine.
