It comes after Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics was found to have breached its licence on nine occasions last year.

The EPA's Annual Report for 2014 outlined how it received 113 breaches related to emissions last year.

They came from 33 different sites, but more than half related to five companies, including Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics in Kilrush.

The company, which is based on the Cooraclare Road, breached licence conditions one nine occasions, all relating to what is desribed as particulates, or namely dust.

Now, Saint-Gobain now wants to be allowed to increase emissions.

The EPA says their request is under consideration.

In response to this article, Saint-Gobain issued the following statement:

In a statement from Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Ireland, a company spokesperson said: “We are aware of this ‘technical’ breach relating to EPA set emission levels. Since 2013, following the submission of a formal request to amend the set levels we have been working closely with the EPA to implement limits that are relevant for our industry sector.

“Whilst the technical amendment is pending we have continued to monitor and submit our emission figures. The EPA accepts that whilst these results will technically be above the current limit they do not have an environmental impact beyond the site boundary. As such the EPA consider them to be minor and record as no further action to taken, however they are still logged as an infraction.

“Our responsibility to the local environment is something we take very seriously at all Saint-Gobain sites and as such we will continue to work closely with the EPA to resolve this issue.”
