Kilnamona Resident Says He “Cannot Fathom” Crash Barrier Proposal For Dangerous Stretch Of N85

A Kilnamona native says he ‘cannot fathom’ why crash barriers have been proposed on a stretch of the N85.

Last week Clare County Council confirmed it’s planning to install a vehicle restraint system along a 630m stretch in the townlands of Mweelagarraun, Knockatemple, Ballyknock and Kilnamona.

A spokesperson for the Local Authority says the Council is looking to progress the N85 realignment scheme to ‘create a safer road network’, however, this will take a number of years to deliver and ‘at this time it is prudent to provide a safer vehicle restraint system’.

Local resident, Nicholas Rynne, claims installing crash barriers will only serve to make the road more dangerous.

Clare County Council Statement:

“Clare County Council, in conjunction with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, is proposing to install a vehicle restraint system (VRS) to replace the existing plastic barriers and other barriers at a number of locations on the N85 at Kilnamona.

In addition, the Council is looking to develop the N85 Kilnamona realignment scheme which would ultimately create a safer road network in this location.

However, as the road realignment scheme will take a number of years to deliver, at this time it is prudent to provide a safer vehicle restraint system for the benefit of all motorists”.
