A Kilnamona-based air quality expert insists emissions from turf are a ‘serious component’ of the amount of smoke being released into the air.
The government last night survived a Dáil vote to scrap an upcoming ban on the commercial sale of turf, with rural Fianna Fail and Fine Gael TDs voting with the Government, despite voicing anger over the ban in recent days.
Sinn Fein’s motion also called for the upcoming carbon tax increase to be abandoned and for the temporary removal of excise duty on home heating oil.
Speaking to his parliamentary party prior to the vote, the Taoiseach said no proposals will affect traditional turf practices or the sharing of turf in rural Ireland.
Alan Bell, who’s Creator of the Ireland Air Quality Alerts Twitter page and based in Kilnamona, says turf emits as many particles of smoke as smoky coal.
