Under the terms and conditions of the new deal a 6-point-7 percent tax on bank deposits under 100,000 euros and a ten per cent on those over that amount could be levied on all deposits in Cypriot banks.

The President, Nicos Anastasiades, has defended the 10 billion euro bailout deal, saying the country was on the verge of bankruptcy.
