Just one fine for dog fouling in Clare in last five years

Just one "on the spot fine" for dog fouling has been issued by Clare authorities in the past five years, even thuogh it’s claimed the problem is on the increase.

Local representatives have spoken of ongoing representations made to them by concerned residents on the matter, and have called for the Council to erect signage warning walkers and joggers of the problem.

This months’s meeting of the  Council even saw one member, Brian Meaney, display a mock sign which he felt would provide the ‘necessary shock tactic’ to tackle the problem.

The Council says it is concerned about the apparent rise in dog fouling, but says it is very difficult to issue prosecutions under the current law, and adds there is no legal obligation on dog owners to clean any mess left behind by their animals.
