Just shy of half the fines relating to dumping in Clare in just over five years have been paid.
Clare County Council has issued 579 fines between 2018 and 2022, with a further 8 issued so far this year, as Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill reports.
Clare County Council has issued 587 fines between 2018 and this month, with the highest number of 171 in 2019 and the lowest number of 64 in 2022.
So far this year, 8 have been issued in this county.
The fines relate to litter, waste, illegal dumping, illegal signage, dog fouling, presentation of waste and dumping at bring banks.
Of those, only 287 have been paid, with a total of €42,900 in fines collected by the local authority between 2018 and 2023.
Where fines are outstanding, the Council issues letters to remind offenders that money is owed, while legal proceedings are also considered.
The Local Authority’s Waste Enforcement Team is specifically tasked with inspecting and reporting on litter blackspots throughout the county.
But the Council says efforts of individuals, the voluntary and community sector and business communities, in challenging and preventing littering, are recognised, and acknowledged.
It says by working in partnership with concerned residents and relevant stakeholders in the county, a targeted programme of awareness, education and enforcement can be implemented and sustained.
