Local authorities can impose an annual tax of 7% of the value of a derelict property on owners in the interests of incentivising development or sale.

Across all of 2024, the levy was billed on just nine properties in Clare, amounting to €124,110, with just €14,300 of this collected by the local authority so far.

In the first half of 2025 meanwhile, 23 site owners have been asked to pay a total amount of €300,160 which is already more than double the amount for the entirety of last year.

Clare County Council has collected €26,000 of this amount to date which equates to less than 9%.

There are 95 properties in total on the Derelict Sites Register in Clare while the local authority says its Derelict Sites Team is dealing with 284 properties considered to be derelict.
