Two major national newspapers will have to wait until next month to find out if they’ll face a hefty bill for the collapsed trial of former Killaloe GP Pascal Carmody.

The Irish Times and the Irish Examiner could have pay costs of around half a million euro arising from the sizeable legal bills incurred by the DPP, Court Services and Mr Carmody during the case.

Submissions in the matter were heard before Ennis Circuit Court today where Judge Donagh McDonagh was told that he had several options open to him including imposing an unlimited fine, a possible jail sentence or compensation costs.

However council for both publications disputed jurisdiction arguing that a contempt trial cannot be joined into the previous criminal proceedings.

Judgement in the case has been reserved and will be heard in Dublin on June 27th
