A judge who imposed fines on Dail deputies, Mick Wallace and Clare Daly has made a couple of thinly veiled barbs at the Governor of Limerick prison over the two deputies enjoying 'afternoon tea' at the prison last month.
Judge Patrick Durcan last year imposed fines totalling €4,000 on Deputy Wallace and Deputy Daly after they breached the airport perimeter at Shannon airport in July 2014.
Fines were imposed on Mick Wallace and Clare Daly, but they were brought separately from Dublin to Limerick prison by Gardai after this was not paid.
The estimated cost of transporting and processing is in the region of €8,000, and of their set sentences of 30 days in jail, both TDs served only a matter of hours.
Yesterday, in a separate case at Killaloe District Court, a 27 year old man was granted bail to allow him attend a nine month long drug rehab course.
Judge Patrick Durcan imposed a fine of €350 on him for possession of drugs, with six months to pay and 15 days in prison if no fine is paid.
Judge Durcan remarked: “That shouldn't cause too much difficulty for (the accused). All he has to do is hop into Limerick prison for afternoon tea with the Governor and that seems to be the practice at Limerick prison.”
Later, in a separate case, the Judge directed rhat the prison governor be made aware of another accused’s medical condition, saying it was important that the "serious" case is treated as such.
