Councillor James Breen has announced that he won't be running the upcoming General Election.
There had been speculation linking the Kilnamona Independent Councillor and former TD with a Dáil bid in recent weeks.
James Breen served one term in the Dáil, from 2002-2007, but failed to retain his seat in 2007
In the most recent general election four years later, he secured six-and-a-half thousand first preference votes, but was the last candidate eliminated.
James Breen remains a member of Clare County Council, and is its current Cathaoirleach, but this afternoon he's announced that he won't seek another return to national politics.
He has said that his decision comes after consultation with his family and supporters, but that he now thinks it's time for new people to step forward.
He has thanked people for their loyalty, and says he'll continue to represent their interests on Clare County Council
