Irish Water Legislation Passes Through Dáil Despite McNamara Concerns

The Water Services Bill – which aims to give effect to the lower charges from next year will go before the Seanad today.

It passed all stages in the Dáil last night with the Environment Minister making a gesture on the issue of a plebiscite to protect against privatisation, ensuring that a future government must hold such a vote.

However, the legislation has been criticised by one Clare Government TD.

Labour's Michael McNamara questioned why the Environment Minister wanted to increase the size of the Irish Water board, and sought changes to ensure no could be no conflict of interest.
