Irish Cement Workers go on strike

Up to 100 workers at Irish Cement Ltd plants in Limerick and Meath have gone on strike.

They’ve been manning pickets at the entrances to the sites at Castlemungret in Co. Limerick and Platin in Co. Meath, since early this morning.

The workers say they’re protesting at the company’s failure to implement a Labour Court recommendation that they be paid thousands of euro they say they’re owed by the firm.

Employees are represented by the Irish Cement Group of Unions which includes SIPTU, the TEEU and Unite.

In a statement to Clare FM this evening, management at Irish Cement have expressed disappointment at the industrial action, and say workers have rejected a 6% pay cut suggested by the Labour Court in the past week.
